What does happy hour actually cost in America? We analyzed the live happy hour listings of 44,332 bars and restaurants across 2,730 US cities — extracting 41,664 individual price points from real, currently-advertised specials — to find out.
This is the largest public study of US happy hour pricing we're aware of. Here's what the numbers say in 2026.
All data is sourced from Happy Hour Map, which tracks live happy hour schedules for 44,000+ bars in 2,700+ cities across all 50 states. Prices reflect specials advertised as of July 2026.
Across every advertised price we tracked, here's the national picture by category:
| Category | Average | Median | Price points |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beer (drafts, domestics, bottles) | $4.77 | $5.00 | 10,156 |
| Well / rail drinks | $4.85 | $5.00 | 1,633 |
| Food specials (apps, wings, tacos) | $6.12 | $6.00 | 4,094 |
| Wine by the glass | $6.70 | $6.00 | 1,400 |
| Cocktails & margaritas | $7.07 | $6.00 | 7,825 |
The classic advice holds up in the data: $4–6 is the fair zone for a happy hour beer or well drink. Under $4 is a genuine steal. Over $7, it's not really a deal — it's just a menu.

No surprises at the top — LA, New York, and the Bay Area lead — but the spread is smaller than you might guess. Even in the most expensive city in America, the average happy hour drink is still under $6. Happy hour is the great equalizer: the whole point of the institution is that prices converge on the same $4–6 band everywhere. The interesting outlier is Omaha, which sneaks into the top 15 despite a low cost of living.
Among states with at least 60 measured drink prices:
| # | Cheapest states | Avg. | # | Priciest states | Avg. |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Alabama | $3.89 | 1 | New York | $5.34 |
| 2 | Tennessee | $4.06 | 2 | California | $5.20 |
| 3 | Wisconsin | $4.10 | 3 | Nevada | $5.08 |
| 4 | Oklahoma | $4.20 | 4 | Connecticut | $5.08 |

| 10 | Idaho | $4.60 | 10 | Wyoming | $4.92 |
Not every happy hour advertises an absolute price. A huge share of American bars — especially neighborhood spots — simply knock a flat dollar amount off the regular price. Across 16,556 dollar-off deals, the numbers are remarkably consistent:
"A buck off drafts" is, statistically, the single most American happy hour deal there is.

Happy Hour Map maintains live happy hour listings for 44,332 bars and restaurants across 2,730 US cities in all 50 states, collected from venues' published specials and continuously updated. For this study we parsed every advertised special and extracted 41,664 usable price signals: 25,108 absolute prices (e.g., "$5 house margaritas") categorized as beer, wine, cocktails, well drinks, or food, plus 16,556 flat dollar-off discounts (e.g., "$1 off all drafts"). Prices outside plausible bounds were discarded. City rankings require a minimum of 40 price samples; state rankings require 60. Cities were assigned to states by ZIP code. Averages are simple means across advertised prices; medians are reported alongside to guard against outliers. Timing statistics are parsed from each venue's advertised happy hour schedule (43,376 venues with parseable times).
A note on limitations: advertised specials change frequently, and our listings skew toward venues that publish their specials online. Treat city-level averages as directional comparisons, not menu guarantees.
